No work, no hours
January 8th, 2008 at 10:03 am (workplace)
I have been working on the same assignment since the middle of October. When we first started we had plenty of hours and overtime. We where still playing catch up. Last week, we found out that there was not enough work because we had gotten ahead of schedule. My team works very well together and some of us have fast or very fast as our pace of work. I am one of those who does not have slow, my pace is either very fast or fast. I have been told many times to slow down, but even my slow with talking to people and stopping between stuffings of mail pieces, I was still finishing my bucket within 30 minutes or less.
Yesterday I went in before 7am, hoping they would have work for me. My other team mates got their a few minutes before me, we had to seat there for 2 hours to wait for our other supervisor. Then she had us waiting for another 3o minutes before she told us there was no work. I am so frustrated, I need to be working at least 35 hours at this job just to met basic needs for Hubby and I. Yesterday I was told to call in at 830, I called and lift both supervisors a message which is yet to be returned.
I am frustrated because they will not end our assignment with the temp agency that hired us, it would be nice if they did, because then my company would maybe be able to place us in another position sooner. Last week I worked 16 hours, which means I lost holiday pay for New Years because my company policy is that we have to work 24 hours the week of the holiday. I explain this to my supervisor on site, and she was unable to find me more work. I called my company and they to where unable to find me more work.
Here’s what burns. My husband received a email asking if he had any friends who needed work. We both work for the same company, it a good company, but why on earth would they try to hire more people when they can’t find us work quick enough. It normally takes them up to 10 days to find us assignments. I am hoping the phone call I received from another temp agency will pan out for me. I need a new job, I been looking but seems like either they think I am over qualified or I need my 4 year degree completed. How can I be over qualified, should it be my decision if I want to be paid less for my work, and not their decision. I show up to work everyday early, I give it my all and it like they treat us like we are disposable people. I guess most companies see their employees as disposable people, they could hire someone with less experience, which means less pay, and maybe they don’t have to cover insurance cost.
I love the way companies say they are restructuring, it just a nice way of firing a person.
